Hog manure spill travels miles, empties into river; Iowa DNR investigates

MURRAY, IOWA – The Iowa DNR is investigating a discharge of swine manure from a confinement sow operation in Clarke County that reached the Thompson River.

The spill occurred about eight miles south of Murray, after Swine Graphics – ADL 6 transferred manure from below building pits to an outdoors basin. The transfer pipe broke releasing an unknown amount of manure. Swine Graphics staff have taken action to stop the manure release.

The manure traveled overland to a farm pond, which overflowed and then ran into a small unnamed stream and flowed about 2.5 miles to the Thompson River.

DNR staff took water samples and checked for dead fish in the farm pond, the tributary and in the river for several miles downstream. They did not find any dead fish.

The DNR is monitoring spill containment and cleanup and will consider appropriate enforcement action.

The out of state crowd refers to Iowa as THE STINKY STATE.

Update on Spill. The origin has actually been traced to Clear Lake. The vicinity of 4th Avenue South and North 8th Street. Further it has been determined that the manure if of human origin, oozing out of a basement window. Details at 10

Oh and another reason . Idiots. Let’s all enjoy our new way of living in MC. It’s going to be so great. No issues what so ever. I especially like the thought of guests coming to town and people I want to impress as we eat the smell we are inhaling. Awesome. Then when we meet people out of town for a wkend we will carry the pig perfume with us. It doesn’t go away. On your clothes forever.

This is Iowa, an accident, get over it.

That would be like complaining about the farmers who will soon begin dumping mega tons of pesticides, herbicides an other chemicals on our soil deliberately. And then we drive right by them and give them a friendly wave of approval. No righteous outrage then.

How many times does a person need to explain that the business of mass death is BAD KARMA. And on so many levels.

I rarely find happiness in anything anymore. I feel numb, like my emotional development was stunted as a child; or I just experienced so many negative things in my life to the point that I am perpetually unhappy. I am incredibly blunt to the point that people feel the need to express the fact that I am mean or even go as far as calling me an asshole for doing something as simple as stating the obvious. I haven’t developed romantic feelings for anyone in two years, and I has become increasingly harder to go out in public or talk to people.

Have you talked to anyone about your issues?

No. Why should I?

It sounds like you have a lot of unresolved issues that need to be dealt with or we all might be seeing you on the six o’clock news someday.

Zippy, we all appreciate your style, about 8 comments ago, but now it’s tired. You’re tired. Do me a favor and fall into the wood chipper. There’s one on north Monroe.

Join me, and we can enter paradise together! As brothers!

Well, $h*t rolls down hill.

All that having been said, do us all a “Karmic Favor” and shut your hole.

$12 bucks a hour is not good jobs and is the risk worth it for our area? I don’t think so.

DNR = don’t know ratchit.

Accidents happen and always have. This is nothing new. If you want to eat meat you have to accept such things.

Why do cities have treatment plants and pig farmers don’t. Lets pump our shit in the river skip the treatment plant and save the taxpayer some money. There should never be a sewage spill. It is lack of supervision. My take would be they started pumping and no one was a around to monitor the pumping the hose ruptured and continued to pump. That is not a accident. Why do we need clean water just ask the citizens in Michigan and flint in particular gov today is a failure and its is on the republicans.

It was a Democrat Mayor, Dayne Walling in charge of public utilities in Flint that decided to switch to drawing the drinking water from the river instead of Lake Huron, this was not a republican deal, get your facts straight.

LVS-Wow, how disappointing to hear you say this. I never thought I would see the day you would buddy up with this Mayor and council. You comment sounds like it came right out of the Mayor’s mouth. You know this spill is bad and should have never been allowed to happen. You sound like you have been bought and paid off just like our city government…Sad….Sad…Sad.

You are still pretty much stupid and probably always will be. This is a done deal get used to it and shut the freak up, dumb azz.

LVS-When you are over at your buddy the mayor’s house later tonight tell him hi from me. I know that you’ll be on your knees with your mouth full but when you get a chance just tell him I said hi. Thanks

LVS’s whole life has been spent on his knees.
It’s the only way that he can survive, since he is too stupid & gutless to make it on his own.

What a total disappointment to our community you have become LVS. Still can’t believe you now bow down to the mayor. So disappointed in you

Don’t waste you time. Internet petitions are a dime a dozen and sadly, you can’t even wipe your ass with them.

Ever heard of the Cherokee Prophecies.

@mint. It’s clearly obvious that you are Peter. Just how many personalities do you have?

This will be a regular ocurance across North Iowa soon..jobs, jobs,jobs..good jobs.. $12.29 an hour jobs..benefits after 1 year..

Say it isn’t so, accidents do happen. Coming soon to an area near you…
