Pork plant opinion: Are we desperate or stupid?

Jere Null, Prestage Foods, makes presentation and takes questions during public hearing on proposed pork processing plant for Mason City

From a concerned Mason City citizen –

Appears that the “together” NICEDC isn’t, wasn’t, quite all IN on this. Some knew, some didn’t. Then the mouth piece, GG took it to the citizens with only the spin for it’s benefits. Could you ever expect to read a GG article like on the front page and page 4A in the 3/30 DM Register?

In Iowa hogs come before the environment, people, and sane policy on stink/pollution
vs decent living conditions. So a County Bd. Input is nothing but political theater on where commercial hog farming and it’s associate stink and pollution are allowed by the weak Iowa Legislature and Governors. Local say and control does not exist in this State on this issue in any meaningful way.

CL one of only a few major natural public recreational benefits in this hog state can and will be sacrificed for more commercial hog farms and to hell with any other considerations. Thanks MC.

Are we desperate or stupid? Pile public incentives into the gift package and ram it
through. The half of the Tax Increment dollars from this plant the City will take from our MCSD, County and City will be spent to add more wells, mains, and other City infrastructure necessary due to this plant. So bottom line is the whole est. $3M in new Prestage property tax will go for the company’s benefit for first ten years.

To gain population from this plant requires IN migration? From where for this work?
To fill what percent of these jobs? IF the jobs were primarily filled by current NI
residents would’ that cause vacant positions at existing NI Employers? How will/would they respond?

Appears consideration of the whole picture was sacrificed in the rush to score a so called grand slam home run in MC by the few “insiders”. Bigger and better than McKesson in Clear Lake.

We’ll see and soon smell the difference.

The tyrant mayor of Mason City is trying to pressure the Mason City. City Council to ram this hog processing plant down our throats without comment from the public. I found this website http://www.boycottmasoncityia.net take a look

Casino passed on. Target Distribution passed on. Visa Distribution Ctr passed on. WE WANT THE HOGS!!!! lost utterly lost.

Ft. Dodge, Sioux City and Mason City..the armpits of Iowa. Desperate. 52 hours work weeks to obtain 40k….do the math

Working 2 or 3 part time jobs to make ends meet is much more practical. That working 52 hours a week argument is weak. I’m not sure yet how I feel about this place, but people having to work for their money is not the problem I have with it.

This is the first thing I have agreed with from the Mason City Council in years. We lost out on the Casino, let’s not let this slip by. The Economic positive impact will far outweigh any of the negatives. This type of business and the cement plants were the mainstay of Mason city, upon which all else was developed. And, if you remember, the people who worked there– were immigrants for all over. Many lived at Lehigh Row… they made money, they eventually purchased homes, their children were educated in our schools, many went on to college and did great things….. Let’s not be so short-sighted that we let small thinking prevail.

Well Watchy Dog what happened when ICE raided the packing plant in Storm Lake Ia. Half the employees were illegals – Well the liberals more or less said thats okay – The town is slowly turning into a 3rd world city and your to stupid or doped up to realize we are sick of you worthless liberal turds.

I go to Storm Lake once a month on business and you are correct in your statement about it becoming a Third World city. The packing plants in that town ruined that town. The quality of life is much different than it was Before these plants came in

Like most other tax incentive corporate sweet deals for the joe blow taxpayer they will most likely sell out when the TIF taxpayer contract is about to expire -lets say they sell to a foreign government – China for example. Under the new TPP trade agreement this corporation/property would fall under (UN) united Nations law and they would only have to abid by international law and not city/state/federal law -and do you think they care if they stink up and desiminate your person or property? Wake up! Lying Ted Cruz/Kasich/Clinton/and the commie Sanders are all for the TPP trade deal. The only only one standing against it is DONALD TRUMP. He is the only TRUE American running for president.

After listening to the pros and cons of this new hog kill, I am withdrawing my blanket support of this project until further study is and information is offered to the community.

The logic against this facility regarding the taxpayers huge participation, the long term tax implications, the welfare problems the workforce will add to the social programs, and the strain it will it place on area schools have me leaning into the nay column.

Money isn’t everything.

There will be a lot of job openings after DONALD TRUMP takes charge and the illegals are deported / Wake up stupid – our elected officials have run our great country into the ground for their own greed for money from the upper class elite -their all corporate bought and paid for puppets. Geez? To stand there and say pig chit does’nt stink – I get the idea that something about this deal STINKS.

Donald Trump doesn’t have anything to do with this. Are you stupid or what?

What makes you think the workers will be “ILLEGAL”? And, why do you think their children are not as smart as other children? Is it because they are brown or because they will be able to speak Spanish as well as English. Can you speak Spanish? No, I guess that make you the stupid one doesn’t it?

Read an editorial in the paper today that shows how this plant will have a negative impact on our community schools in many ways from kids who’s parents work at this plant being entitled to free or reduced lunches to test scores that will be lower. These were facts from what other Cities have experienced with a large hog facility like this in I believe Waterloo, Marshalltown and a few others. Not saying don’t welcome them just lets take it slow and get all the facts and see how this is going to affect our community good and bad.

A lot of people are just mad about the illegal immigration issue. Yes, they do come illegally from other places, but the numbers from south of the border are staggering. I also do not blame the humble family ones for doing what I may do in their shoes, but many have way too much attitude for someone who gets free health benefits that even us citizens do not receive. It’s not a civil rights thing and they should just be lucky not to be caught and deported, much less march in the streets. Hell, Mexico’s laws on immigration are much harsher than ours and many country’s poverty makes Mexico look like paradise, but they do not share the luxury of just easily hopping a border due to geographic location.

Still, this is not every Mexican and there are even those legal immigrants who oppose this, so acting teed off because some kid is talking to his grandmother in Spanish is just being a retarded generalizing dick.
