MASON CITY – Police charged a former Mason City man with lying to them about a stolen car that crashed into a utility pole, but the charge was dismissed.
On November 9, 2015 at 8:49 PM, a vehicle lost control and snapped a utility pole in the 2100 block of South Federal. Two males were seen running from the car. Officers were unable to contact the owner and the car was towed. On November 10, at 5:39 AM, the owner of the car in the accident, 29-year-old Ryan McCurnin of Cedar Falls, contacted police and reported his car was stolen from a residence he was currently at in the 100 block of 23rd Street SW. Following the police investigation, police applied for an arrest warrant on November 14, 2015, charging McCurnin with the following crimes: False Report; Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Collision; No Insurance; and Failure to Maintain Control.
However, the charges of filing a false report to law enforcement, leaving the scene of a collision and no insurance were dismissed last month. But, McCurnin pleaded guilty to failure to maintain control. He was ordered to pay $224.13 in fines and court fees.
Also, McCurnin was arrested by University of Northern Iowa Police on October 29, 2015, for third or subsequent offense public intoxication. In February, he entered a guilty plea to this crime. He was given a one-year suspended jail term, a suspended fine and a year of probation.
