Seven people charged after fire discovered in vacant building

MASON CITY – Police rounded up two adults and five minors after a fire was discovered in an abandoned building in Mason City.

Mason City police say that on March 21, 2016 at about 5:13 PM, Mason City Police were checking a vacant building at 620 North Massachusetts. This is the former location of Croell Ready Mix. Police found four subjects inside the building who had started a fire from scrap lumber. Two additional subjects were then caught a few blocks away after running from the building.

Mason City Police arrested Alicia Adams, age 25 of Mason City and Brandon Bruns, age 29 of Mason City. Both subjects were arrested for Criminal Trespass and Reckless Use of Fire. Two juveniles were also charged with Criminal Trespass and Reckless Use of Fire. A third juvenile was charged with Criminal Trespass, and a fourth juvenile was charged with Criminal Trespass and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. A fifth juvenile was located later and also charged with Criminal Trespass. The adults were held at the Cerro Gordo County Jail and all of the juveniles were released to their parents.

There was no damage to the building and no one was injured, police say. The case remains under investigation and anyone with information should contact the Mason City Police at 641-421-3636, or Crime Stoppers at 800-383-0088.
