I wish I had a job that paid $50 thousand + a year, plus health coverage, paid vacation, a retirement fund that’s sound and safe from thieving fingers. Anybody know if the city is hiring. But then again I could try Curries. I just heard of a guy that made over $70 thou last year. Not to shabby I guess, where do I apply.

This is 2016 not 1916….just saying ‘

Not hard to tell there is some disgruntle city employees writing on here. Wonder if they ever managed anything or anyone. Bet not easier to hide and complain.

Are you saying that they don’t like their job, or that they work in a hostile work environment. Why are they disgruntle. Any idea who the disgruntle city employees are.

For some perspective:

Mason City’s population was 27,000 approximately in 1940.

Mason City’s population is 27,000 today, approximately.

Based on numbers and some common sense logic, these salaries are outrageous. Since 1940 Mason City has had some urban sprawl and growth in numbers of families. We now have smaller family units so we see more homes, miles of streets. Also retail growth resulting in more traffic, ect.

I get inflation, but?

But, somehow I just can’t see these salaries as justified when you look at the stagnant population growth. Then when you look at the wage scale in the private sector, clearly the establishment good old boy network has been successful.

All at the expense of the middle class working stiff.

The citizens of Mason City has sure taken it the shorts.

Seriously, watchdog, do you have a point here? Nothing you have said proves anything, or as far as that goes, makes any sense. With someone like you watching citizen’s backs, I’ll take my chances.

what degrees do these officers hold and how many years in college did it take to earn them. Still no leads on any major crimes I read the incident report and its clear how little they do and how dangerous their jobs are not.

You are too chicken shit to do their job.

Would you rather there be MORE crime? Should they get paid BY the incident? You know, they hire new officers from time to time. You could get a “cushy job on the force” once you make it through the selection process, attend and graduate the academy. Then you would be on easy street! You should do a ride along sometime and let them know how easy they have it and how overpaid they are.

If these salaries are comparable with what other cities are paying then I believe they are just. The City is like any other business they must pay what the market has set as wages. Not sure if I would want to be a police officer in this day and age when everything they do is cause for second guessing. If someone is breaking the law and gets hurt by an officer too bad that’s the risk they took. I would rather see the officer go home safe and sound instead of a criminal.

I am not talking about police officers or even firemen who have very dangerous jobs and should be compensated accordingly. I am talking about street workers and supervisors who have supervisors doing their work for them and still think should get top dollar.

So YOU should decide how the city is run and who gets paid how much? Good paying jobs for everyone!*
* (except when LVS has to pay for it and he doesn’t think people are worth it or aren’t related to him).

I agree with not wanting to be an officer in this day and age but not with the city being like a business. I think a business is there to make money and that’s not the city’s place. The city has a responsibility to provide services at the most reasonable cost to the taxpayer. LVS is right supervisors that have supervisors (or foremen) doing their jobs isn’t right.

How much of these salaries are due to overtime pay. Everyone would expect extra pay for extra work no matter where you work. Not hard to tell the city has some disgruntled employees by some of these comments.

what is the total for just for mcpd salaries? Buy traffic cams. they are more effective and cost less.

Privatization of law enforcement is a great way to bring blackwater back. No thanks. I think I will vote against ANY move toward a surveillance state that I can.

STANGLER, WILLIAM P 112,198.72 …O&M Manager
BERGGREN, ROBERT J 67,144.40 …Street Supervisor
BRATTRUD, KEVIN S 61,394.23 …Sanitation Supervisor
BOHL, JOE A 57,083.92 …Water Utility Supervisor

Here is what grinds my gears. How many chiefs does O&M need? It is just not these guys but under each supervisor they have a working foreman, one of them has two, to do their jobs and now the rummer is that they want to hire another. My understanding is that these guys each get paid an extra $4,000 to $5,000 a year to do what these supervisors get paid to do. Isn’t this the dept that recently was shorted $200,000+? If that is the case it seems simple to me either get rid of these foreman and make these supervisors do their jobs or better yet get rid of these supervisors and let the foreman do it. Take the cream off the top, that’s nearly $300,000.

@Ralph-People are power so they keep adding to their little kingdom’s. It is time (past time) for a clean up in our city. It won’t happen under a fat drunk who approved his own raise for doing nothing.

That “Anonymous” was me. Matt must have reset the system.

so now we DON’T want good paying jobs (unless you or someone you deem worthy has them)?

They should be paid for the job skills required to perform their jobs and not just because they belong to a union. They are getting theirs on the backs of the taxpayers.

What union(s) do those four people belong to?

They don’t. And, yet they are still grossly overpaid for what they do.

Cent, credit union..

What do YOU consider proper monetary compensation for a managerial or supervisory position for a city of ~25k? What qualifies you to make that determination?

@ Just for the record… I myself am all for good paying jobs. This community, not just the city employees, need good paying jobs. My gripe is that the City is already paying four individuals to do a job and they are also paying an additional 3 to 4 more people an additional $4,000 to $5,000 each a year to do that same job and wanting to add another? How many people does it take to do the same job? If O&M is having budget issues I would hope that the mayor and council would look at how these depts are ran and ask the same questions.
@ Check Your Facts… I’m not for sure but I don’t believe any of the above four listed named individuals are in any unions. I don’t think that there is a union for management.

My opinion is that except for the top administration, I am happy that they are paid a living wage. We cry about not having good paying jobs here all the time.. If all the ranters would stop whining, take the Civil Service tests required by some of the positions and apply for open positions, you too could have a decent paying job with benefits. Jealousy is always rampant when these reports come out. It is what it is… get over it. Did you ever think that they are also paying for their own wages as taxpayers as well??? We just use the city services with nothing to give back……Why do people always think that people that work for a city, county etc, should be the working poor??? I am a liberal, but in this area, I am a realist.

I have to agree with you.

Matt is not paid with taxpayer’s money. He is a private business and that is the difference. Get real and get a life.

That is true. He is not paid with taxpayers money. He is paid with YOUR money. The same medium used to bitch about all the low paying jobs in this town is used to sensationalise how much city employees get paid. Kind of talking out both sides of his face don’t ya think?

No I don’t agree. We pay a subscription, at least I do and if I am not happy with what I get for my money I can just quit paying. I don’t have that option with taxes. If I quit paying I lose my house and I have a lot in that. A whole different deal don’t you think?

While this information is not news, I think Matt should publish his annual salary in the spirit of fair play. And before you whine about “I don’t have to” or “this is all public record”. You didn’t have to publish public records either.

Excellent Point. Matt rants and rags ad nauseam about other media in North Iowa. He has trashed their news coverage and individual employees personally. These businesses however have made ther profit and loss statements are part of the public record. Lets see your tax returns Donald!

2014 TRICIA J SANDAHL $65,378.56
2015 SANDAHL, TRICIA J 69,837.57

I’m sure that all of you got a 6.8% INCREASE last year

If this is correct, there’s something wrong with this picture.

It is, just compare the link above to the list on this article.
2014 compared to 2015.

2014 BRENT D TROUT $140,307.52
2015 TROUT, BRENT D 152,771.08

Looks like Brent received a 8.8% pay increase.
Just like the private sector (sarcasm on & off)

And our “illustrious” Mayor, you know, the one that wants to hold costs down.

2014 ERIC A BOOKMEYER $10,700.00
2015 BOOKMEYER, ERIC A 13,200.00

Wow – Eric really made out with a 23% increase

And a police sergeant (KLEMAS, STEVEN MICHAEL 80,101.30) that crashes into parked vehicles making more money than police lieutenants (VANDEWEERD, RON J 78,880.70) or (STEARNS, FRANK M 72,687.79).

80 K for Klemas?

On the top end of this list are some pretty big salaries !

Saturn.

I assume this was for 2015.

Add another 15% for free health care -free dental car – Ipers retirement accounts – life is good for the establishment !

As Obummer said – life is good and you cannot deny wages have not gone up for us government guys -the higher uppers I mean !

152k for the sleazy Trout!?!?

This guy can barely decide what shoes to wear little alone the day to day operations of the city. What a waste of taxpayer dollars.

It just makes you mad, when you think how much better you would do.

And you know this, how.

Just wondering, what makes Trout sleazy.
