MASON CITY – NIT readers reported that a dog was outside in subzero temps, left on a sidewalk at Mason City house – but animal control says it’s “just fine”.
The call to authorities came in after 11 AM about a dog that was curled up in a ball on a sidewalk at 722 North Madison. Reportedly, the dog had been there, motionless, since 9:30 AM.
At the scene, these was indeed a husky outside the back door of the house. Mason City animal control officer Pat Gansen was there, checking on the animal.
“The dog appears to be just fine,” Ms. Gansen told NIT. “That’s a husky. They do the Iditarod. They like to be outside.”
Temps at 9:30 AM until noon were below zero. The dog lifted its head and looked around, and then slowly lowered her head.
Ms. Gansen told NIT that reports like this one have to be taken, so to speak, with a grain of salt, as sometime the callers don’t see how the dog is actually being treated.
“The call was that the dog was out since 9:30 AM, but they may not have seen the dog being taken inside.”
The residents of the house were not home, and Ms. Gansen was leaving a note requesting a call-back. She stated she might drive by later to check on the dog.

Dog left out in the brutal cold and animal control officer, Pat Ganson was too lazy or unfit to do something about it. She said the dog was a husky and could tolerate the cold. Well Ms. Ganson, if you don’t mind would you put on your coat and go sit outside all night and see if you get cold.,,it’s no difference you stupid witch. If the dog is out in freezing weather, it’s obvious he dog is not being treated too well. Ms. Ganson is not fit to be in her position especially when there are many good hearted people who would do a much better job of handling these kinds of cases. She is spending public money for her salary. FIRE HER AND GET SOMEBODY WHO WILL HANDLE THE JOB.

He’s on N. Iowa st corner grey house. The dog is left in a kennel right by the alley. You can’t miss it with his brand new cruiser that just sits there . Last I knew the other deputy across the st west of him also has a k9 that sits in his kennel with a tarp over it. You can hear it bark alot. Sad

Well STEVE! Why does’nt the Sheriffs department do something about it -AND I would be very surprised if T.J. DAVIS was EVER informed or has knowledge of this _ But I will make him aware of this fact shortly- The Sheriffs dept is an institution of its own in worthless county and takes care of its own. If you had any balls you would report this incident. Feel the BURN. He’s a demorat joke too.

Many citizen’s have reported it Nothing has been done of course. My complaint would also go unanswered as well for the simple fact because he’s a deputy. I, and many people are tired of it.

We have a situation here in Worth County (you know – kasino mony- we really do not have a animal control department per say and a lot of BS flowed down the river years ago and still no proper results. The one and only T.J. Davis has been our soldier and county animal humane department for several years. Investing his time and energy and money to help out everytime a situation arises- which is often – he has the knowledge and experience for the task and does not take his unappointed job. lightly. People (and the worth county sheriffs department know who to call if there is an animal in need – Yet! get this – with all the free money floating around – T.J. NEVER receives any money from this worthless county. It’s a flat out SHAME to see our elected county officals not helping this retired US ARMY veteran (and he’s not a spring chicken by any means) . Come on – Man up and help this person out instead of bad mouthing him. PS you supervisors have gift to give to our local big businesses but cannot help out the poor animals and their herdsman? SHAMEFUL -SHAMEFUL!

Why doesn’t TJ.. Davis HELP out that poor old dog that sits in its kennel day in day out in this cold weather that belongs to a sheriffs deputy here in manly? Apparently some citizens here have turned him in but nothing happens. Why has this been allowed to happen? There is another police k9.. bomb dog that also sits in its kennel . It’s a disgrace.
So what happened? Is the dog still outside? Is there an update?
this dog was not born and raised in Alaska it is not conditioned to live under those circumstances, Even if it is the same breed, If you can not give an animal shelter from the elements and food and water,then you don’t need to have one they depend on you to take care of them. and its not being a bleeding heart to care. if more people cared it would be a much better world and yes I help the needed when ever I can and I support our local no kill shelter.take the time to look around you. there are more than just animals out there in need.

It’s a dog. It probably has a better life than some of you bleeding hearts do, so get over yourself. If you’re so upset with this animal being outside why don’t you break out your checkbooks and write a huge donation to an animal shelter? You’ll feel better because you did something nice, plus that shelter benefits too.
I have written several checks, donated food and other supplies and have volunteered as well. And what have you done to earn your right to be the bleeding heart judge and jury?
@ Barney…. seems you might have missed my point. Its my opinion, this dog probably does have it better than some of the people that are posting on this site. Also, I too, belong and donate money to several organizations which deal with animals and wildlife. So, if that makes me a judge and jury for simply stating my opinion, then thanks, I appreciate your thoughtful concerns.

If the owners were not home, how could they possibly have taken the dog in during the hours of 9:30 to 11:00? Just because the dog looked fine does not mean that the dog can last out there all day long with no food, water or shelter.
This wrong on all levels. This dog needs shelter. Need a new Animal Control Officer with some empathy and love for all animals.

Iowa law requires that outdoor dogs have adequate food, water, and shelter. Did this dog have any of that? Heated water bowl? Dog house to get out of the wind? I can understand if there was no food since most dogs are fed twice a day.
I have raised many Malamutes and Siberians in my life time. I have two now, Yes they originally are cold weather dog. but they also get use to the clement in which they live.My dogs love the cold and snow,but they also have the option to come in when they get cold, this dog did not.these dogs can freeze to death just like any other. this animal control is an idiot. she should have taken the dog to some shelter and informed the owners,sense they were unavailable. Do you job right or get out,
Some people should not have the job, really the dog looked fine, hopefully its owners do the right thing. I have Malamutes and yes they like the cold too but i also have a dog door and they come in when they want
poor excuse for a animal control officer, I heard the only reason she is there cause in her lawsuit against the city which she won, she was offered a lifetime job, so why not ride around and do nothing, cant get fired
Since the lawsuit her credibility as a dedicated public servant will always be questioned…….. and justifiably so. She has a reputation and record as being unresponsive…… this from personal experience about reporting obvious animal abuse.
Shes the one who told me my pets cant tell me in anyway if there in pain,my dog was under vet care at all times for a hernia she got when she was spayed wrong, not by my vet the person i got her from vet,she treaten to take her my son said shes under vet care so u cant,she didnt leave with any of my pets my son told her dont come back ,she didnt either,btw i always can tell when my babies hurt, sick tummy aches,cuz were bonded as a family
Gansen really didn’t want to do anything because it is to cold outside. She’d rather just drive around while talking on her phone.
Although I don’t agree with the dog being left outside in these temps people should remember…there is only so much animal control can do with in the law. People should really focus their frustrations on the dog owner who left their dog outside with out proper shelter like a dog house. I get that this is a breed meant to withstand such temperatures but if you plan to leave the animal outside it should at least have the option to enter an insulated dog house.
