Trucker rescued after driving off Interstate into river

ambulanceCLEAR LAKE – A man’s life was saved Thursday morning after he apparently drove his truck and trailer off of Interstate 35 just south of the Highway 122 interchange in Clear Lake and landed in a river.

The incident took place sometime around 5:15 AM, January 14.  A truck driver, 48-year-old Jonathan Hildebrand of Des Moines, had driven his tractor and trailer off of Interstate 35 at the 201 mile marker. The semi truck left the roadway and drove through a guardrail, traveling east and vaulting down into the Winnebago River. The semi came to rest driver side down in the river.  This location is south and east of the Interstate 35 and Highway 122 interchange in Clear Lake.

A Cerro Gordo deputy located Hildebrand at the new Kwik Star convenience store in Clear Lake, not far from the accident scene. He had been driven there by a passer by, according to the Cerro Gordo county sheriff’s office.

Hildebrand was suffering from multiple injuries and hypothermia.   He was taken by Clear Lake ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Mason City.

The Iowa Department of Transportation, Iowa DNR, and Tony’s Towing were notified.  The accident is under investigation.
