Rep. Steckman reports on first day back in Des Moines

From Rep. Sharon Steckman –

Today the 2016 session of the Iowa Legislature opened at the State Capitol in Des Moines. I’m honored to serve the people of Cerro Gordo County in the Iowa House of Representatives for another year.  I have met with and visited too many families who are working hard but still not getting ahead. If we put politics aside and work together to find common ground, I know we’ll have a successful legislative session that addresses building a strong middle class and growing the economy while keeping the state budget balanced.

Some of my the priorities this year include: providing stable and adequate funding to public schools; expanding early childhood education; expanding job training opportunities; improving water quality; and working toward a solution to the Medicaid problems folks all across Iowa are experiencing.

Quality education is the key to building our skilled workforce and growing our economy. I want to ensure that Iowa’s children and grandchildren have the opportunity to achieve the American Dream that starts with a quality education in preschool and continues with a guarantee of affordable job training or college after high school.

The 2016 Legislature runs 100 days and is scheduled to adjourn on April 19th.
