MASON CITY – The Cerro Gordo county sheriff’s office responded to two accidents Saturday at a dangerous intersection, and was refused salt and sand by the county engineer’s office to make the area safer.
According to the Cerro Gordo county sheriff’s office, the first accident occurred at 10:46 AM at or near the intersection of 310th Street and Grouse Avenue (S28). They received a report of three vehicles in the ditch. Luckily, no one was hurt, and the vehicles had no reportable damage. All the vehicles were removed from the ditch. The sheriff’s office said “a request to the county engineers to bring out sand and/or salt was made via email. County engineers refused to come out.”
Not long after this accident, at 12:31 PM, another accident was reported at the same location. Three more vehicles were in the ditch. Upon arrival, a deputy discovered one vehicle that went into the ditch had serious damage to the front end. A state accident report was completed for that vehicle. Again, no one was injured. All vehicles were removed from the ditch by a tow service.
A few hours later, at the scene of the accidents, the road and intersection was icy. 310th Street where it meets Grouse was extremely slick, making for a hazardous situation. There were several locations at the intersection were skid marks and snow tracks showed where vehicles had entered the ditches.

This is a stop sign on a gravel road at an intersection on a curve of B20, which is Grouse Ave/310th St. It’s not like it’s a gravel/gravel intersection with low traffic. The approach to the stop sign is curved, which can cause problems on ice. People driving on B20 are negotiating a curve with torque so it’s easier to wipe them out if a car can’t stop. It’s inexcusable that salt and sand were denied for this intersection when this is a high traffic route to Forest City and Winnebago from the east. Yes, people need to slow down, but ice can be unforgiving.
It sure seems like when law enforcement request something needed for public safety it would over rule the county engineer and would be taken care of immediately.
Gheez!!! What a big surprize that a employee at a city/COUNTY/state/federal agency would tell the average citizen to get screwed -obey the laws and give these fat cat leeches more moeny and benefits because they are now in charge and the people have no say.
rukidding – you must be a pubic servant – read the script – the local law enforcement asked for ONE small dangerous area to be contained because it composed a danger to human life. You would surely make another pimple on hellerys buton.
Its always funny to me how some tough guys can name call when hidden. But just because law enforcement asked for something to be sanded doesn’t mean its a priority. I bet there are hundreds of low traveled intersections in this state that are not sanded do to the cost. I don’t want my taxes raised to pay to sand and salt every road in the state.
Its real funny when people say they want less government and to run a government department like a business. But when they need something they want the government to take care of it for them. You can not sand and sand every road unless you want to spend more in tax money. People need to use their heads and slow down and take it easy.

Thus TIF Grants and a new tool for them to screw over the private citizen obammas spin off of TPP trade policy now Iowa code 28-J – port authority in Iowa? What the hell? Are we going to build another panama canal through Iowa. Corruption at its best.
@Anonymous-I am not real sure on this, but I think it has something to do with the new trade policy that Obama is trying to railroad in. I believe it is so Iowa can try to cash in on that deal. In other words it is to make the farmers richer. Again, not sure.

I didn’t think they can refuse to come out..if law enforcement calls for it.. That is a crazy they want someone to really get hurt..
How can the county refuse when requested by authorities?
Have heard engineer only cares about the bottom line. The heck with safety I guess. Roads are usually like that in whole county.
