CLIVE, Iowa – A Mason City man decided to buy a scratch ticket when he filled up his vehicle with gas last week, and the decision ended up being in his favor as he won $10,000.

Shane Authier claimed the 41st of 48 prizes of $10,000 available in the lottery’s “$250,000 Club” scratch game. He bought his winning ticket Nov. 24 at Kum & Go, 2905 Fourth Ave. in Clear Lake and scratched it off the same day.

“I saw that there was the (winning symbol) and I didn’t scratch what the prize amount was until I was done with the whole ticket,” Authier told lottery employees Nov. 24 as he claimed his prize at the lottery’s regional office in Mason City. “Then I started scratching it real slow to see and realized it was 10 grand.”

The 30-year-old then went back inside the convenience store to verify that he’d won and decided to buy the next ticket in the game.

“I saw that I won and I was like, ‘Well, I better go buy the next one because I’ve heard stories about people buying two (winning tickets) in a row, or grand-prize winners even,” Authier said. “The next one was a $25 winner.”

Authier, who works as a floor installer, told lottery employees that his winnings would be used to take his 10-year-old son to an upcoming pro football game in Green Bay, Wis.

The $250,000 Club scratch game is a $20 ticket.
