snow-shovel-in-snowMASON CITY – Old Man Winter won’t give up.

The National Weather Service reports that a variety of winter weather is in store as a storm affects Iowa late tonight into Tuesday. The significant storm system is expected to bring a variety of winter weather late tonight into Tuesday across the northwest half of the state.

The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Winter Storm Warning for freezing rain and snow, which is in effect from Midnight Tonight to 6 PM CST Tuesday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

Timing and details, a variety of winter precipitation will spread into central Iowa tonight, lasting until at least Tuesday morning. Freezing rain is expected to develop over much of the warning area later tonight before quickly changing to all snow Monday morning. Monday morning will be the period of heaviest snow, but additional snowfall and other mixed wintry precipitation of varied intensities will continue into Monday evening before switching predominately to all lighter snow overnight Monday night or early Tuesday.

Storm total snow/ice accumulations, snow accumulations will range from 1 to 3 inches on the east side of the warning to around 10 inches in northwest Iowa. Ice accumulations will be highest on the southeast side of the warning area with up to one quarter inch of accretion with much lighter amounts towards the Minnesota border.

Winds/visibility: initially east at 5 to 15 mph, becoming southwest 10 to 20 mph Monday night.

Impacts: ice and then snow accumulations will lead to hazardous travel conditions, and may especially impact the Monday morning commute. The heavy wet snow will also be difficult to shovel and remove.

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow and ice are expected or occurring. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.
