It sure looks like the coach is a wimp who is letting the parents run the team. They lose every single year and I don’t believe for a second that those kids are any worse athletes than any other team. It has to be the coaching.
How many of the top male athletes from MCHS have landed over in Clear Lake again this year? It doesn’t help matters when the best players are leaving MC to go play for their neighbors to the West. Why does this keep happening?
Coaching, and the program in general, is way better in Clear Lake.
Clear Lake coach is a former college & NFL player. If the kids have any aspersions of playing football after high school the kids want to play for this coach.
Open enrollment has definitely hurt MC football.

The top players wimped out to go play for smaller schools.”The Chosen Group” got all the playing time in jr high.Other kids never got a chance to play or coached up so most of them quit. Now that group packed their bags and went to smaller schools ,Clear lake, Central Springs ,and Newman. You think football is bad wait until you see the future basketball team.It doesn’t also help Berkley is a complete moron. Yea lets run the ball 99% of the time and see what happens.
The issue with MC football goes beyond coaching. Previous administration provided little support for football and other sports for the matter. The former leader of our school district tried to remove all assistant coaches and elimate the AD position which lead to the Football coach to leave MC. She also combined our 2 middle schools into 1 school eliminating one full middle school team for 7th and 8th grades. Spent 40 million on renovating the HS and MS and not adding or improving a single athletic facility other than some fresh paint and new trophy cases. They didn’t even put air conditioning in the weight room. Our athletic training facilities are among the worse in 4A if not in the state especially compared to the other CIML schools. A few athletic programs are strong despite the above however these sports futures are not looking good unless the new leadership and school board is willing to provide the resources needed to improve.

Have been in the John Adams’ pool lately? Every M.C. school sports facility has had a major upgrade in the last 10 or so years except the pool. Problem is 10 or so years ago the swim parents (when their kids were little in swim club) were told the pool was going to be upgraded, now administration/school board doesn’t seem to remember that conversation.
As far as players/coaches in the “popular” sports…
My daughter loved softball, played T-Ball/softball every year she could through Parks and Rec. Never missed a practice as an 8th grader going into 9th for freshman softball. When the games started she would only play 1 or no innings so I questioned the freshman coach asking why my daughter didn’t play more as she obviously knew how to play with her previous experience. She admitted that she plays the players that were on travailing teams as they are not so rough around the edges. I asked her “isn’t your job as a couch to help these players and “polish” them up” , She said she didn’t have time to do that. In talking to my daughter she told me at practice the couch would focus on the travelling team members and basically ignore the other payers. Wonder how many diamonds in the rough these sports have missed out on as they all seem to favor the parents with the money for these traveling teams.
On a side note, when my daughter was playing Parks and Rec ball a travelling team scout talked to us about joining his team and bragged about how good our daughter was, natural ability, the team really needs her, blah,blah blah. After listening to his speal and the costs we explained we could’t afford it and with my rotating schedule we wouldn’t be able to make it to every tournament. BUT, if she is as good as YOU say she is we can pay half and it should be no problem getting her ride to these tournaments. Once he found out we couldn’t afford it I guess our daughter wasn’t so good after all in his eyes.
The sports facilities we have besides swimming are top notch for games. Our HS gym, Mohawk Field, and Roosevelt Field would be ranked highly compared to other 4a schools and also the CIML. However, the problem is the lack of training facilities which are important to the development of young athletes especially for those kids that don’t have the opportunity to play travel ball. Our middle school basketball teams practice in play in an inadequate gym, our middle school football teams don’t have a locker room, our freshman boys basketball team practices at an small elementary gym and our baseball and softball programs are fortunate to have an off site privately owned facility to train. Also, the weight room is tiny which has no ac. What is needed desperately is another gym at the HS to help with the training of our athletes to complete with the bigger CIML schools.
It’s unfortunate that your daughter had a bad experience with softball. Unfortunately with the competition MC plays for softball those girls who have travel ball experience will probably be ahead of those who only play Park N Rec just based on the competition they see when they play other travel teams. Again playing against the non metro CIML schools is not a fair match up. They are twice as big as us in some cases and they have a larger number of girls out for softball. Very few 8th graders even play with the big schools and a majority of the kids have way more opportunities for travel ball. It’s the same in baseball. The administration and school board needs to decide if MC just wants to participate in high school sports or if they want to actually compete. Until that is decided MC will continue to lose kids to smaller school districts and will not be able to retain the existing good coaches (there are some great coaches in MC) or bring in good coaches as replacements. Parents need to be vocal with the school board and administrators and take action and help fix the problem.

Actually since around 2012 or 2013 the state went to a 5 class system in several girls sports including volleyball, basketball, and softball. Mason City is the largest school in the state in Class 4A in those particular sports. Their regular season in those sports is filled with schools from a variety of levels but once tournament play begins they are the biggest. If you are talking about competing for conference titles than a switch in conferences would make definite sense. On the boys side there are no 5 class sports…. and according to the BEDS documents MC is still 150 students away from dropping down to the 3A level in the sports that have 4 classes including football. I suggest people that are wondering how the MC facilities compare with other 4A schools in the state travel to Johnston, SE Polk, WDM Valley, Urbandale, the Dubuque schools, Waukee, Ames, and even 3A and some 2A schools. It is a trip into the future going from the facilities in MC to those other schools.
It has always been that way. Kids with parents with money and influence get to play while better athletes sit and watch and finally quit out of frustration. The coaches don’t have the balls to tell the parents they don’t run the team, so every year they lose and the better athletes go to other towns.
The football program has always had huge issues since it won a title back in late 70s. I remember in the 90s the coaches were bullies after school and in the classroom. Very specific memories of some serious targeting of down-and-out students who were easy prey. Has this culture changed today? Maybe, but the product on the field is as bad as ever. Maybe a couple years off is in order.
