MASON CITY – 7th Street SE will be closed between South Delaware Avenue and South Pennsylvania Avenue for approximately one week beginning Monday, September 20th. The closure is necessary for a repair on a sanitary sewer main.

Use caution and expect delays when travelling near the construction zone; avoid the area when possible.

Didn’t Biden commit a crime by knowingly killing civilians?

    • Anonymous Reply Report comment

      September 19, 2021 at 12:21 pm

No, he didn’t. The military has already admitted they ordered the strike and that the info about civilians present came too late to stop the bombing. Did you ever hold trump responsible for the misdeeds of his administration’s many blunders? Or for the crimes committed by his appointees to office? Or for the crimes committed by his family? No, of course not because that wouldn’t fit into your stupid agenda.

Mason city lost 36-3 to Webster city last night. They need to get rid of John lee. He does not have the time for one thing. Teacher, councilman, coach, and wanna be realtor. Maybe he should try to be good at something first but football coach is not one of them.

Please don’t be so tough on John. He’s a good teacher. As far as a Councilman, not sure, but he tried his best I think. He was the swing down vote on the Prestage deal so I think he deserves a lot of credit pushing back against the local realtors at the time (including his wife) that stood to make a lot of commissions if it went through.
Being a football coach in Mason City is a hard job that nobody else wants.

You seem to believe that a good coach can take any players and turn them into a dynamo team. Not true. You have to have a system in your city that teaches the fundamentals at an early age and fine tunes those players as they move from one age group to the next. Does MC have a program in place for younger players? If they do, who runs it and how many kids are involved in it?

    Mason City Room 9-7-21
    Mason City, Iowa 6:10 P.M.

    MINUTES
    COUNCIL WORKSESSION

The City Council of the City of Mason City, Iowa, met in Worksession pursuant to law and rules of said Council, in the Mason City Room of the Mason City Public Library at 6:10 P.M., on September 7, 2021 when a quorum was declared. The meeting was called to order by the Mayor and on roll being called, there were present, Mayor in the Chair Schickel and the following Council Members: Adams, Jaszewski, Symonds, Thoma. Absent: Masson (arrived 6:20 P.M.), Lee (arrived 6:51 P.M.).

    1. Presentation by SOO Green Line on a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission line currently planned through Mason City railroad corridors:

Neil Jones, Vice President, Raj V Rajan Vice President of Development and Craig Schoenfeld Senior Accountant were present to provide an overview pertaining to electric power transmission and development and construction. They discussed how this would change the way transmission was built, new markets and how this same model was successfully used for fiber optics. They explained they would dig and bury conduits using a three foot ground level clearance and would limit the environmental impact as well as the visual impact, noting no coolant fluid would be needed and stressed on the number of jobs this would bring to town.

Jones explained this was an introductory meeting and the 2nd step in the permitting process, adding they would also need a franchise agreement with 24 other municipalities. He stated Soo Green Line would source low-cost renewable generation from MISO which served 15 mid-western states and 42 million customers. He talked about wind resource and wind turbines explaining that because the wind had been so good the electrical system that supported it had not expanded at the same level, creating a bottleneck and Soo Green would relieve that market. It would level the markets between MISO and PJM and would connect to strong grid points west of Mason City. He explained it would be a three year construction window starting in 2023 and ending in 2026

6:20 P.M. Council Member Masson entered Council Chambers.

Jones provided the following bullet points:

    1. Installed underground so there would be no visual impact and only a three foot wide trench.
    2. Co-located in transportation ROW (rail and roads)
    3. Grid-tied, not Project-tied
    4. Utilize modern HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) technology
    5. No Cost Allocation – those who use the line would pay for it.

Schickel asked where the convertor station would be located and the benefit to Cerro Gordo County with Jones stating 1 mile west of the Mason City Municipal Boundary and Rajan commenting on the economic impact (property taxes and several thousand high paying construction jobs though the corridor).

Schickel asked if they had made initial contact with property owners and their reaction with Neil stating they contacted people and had authorization by the railroad to utilize the corridor, adding the response had been mixed, advising 60% on both sides of the rail had signed optional agreements/good neighbor agreements.

Adams asked how many of the construction jobs were permanent with Rajan stating there would be ten or twelve local jobs.

Adams referred to the convertor sites and asked how long there would be construction in Mason City with Jones stating if it was open Ag land it would be less than a month and as far as the converter site it would be three years.

Jaszewski questioned the maintenance of the lines themselves and whether there would be any disruption with Jones explaining they would fill the trench up and pull the cables through afterwards, noting this method would help with operation and maintenance.

Masson commented on the statement that 60% of the people were favorable and asked about the other 40% and what their concerns were with Jones stating it was a wide range for some it wasn’t enough money and for another it was not doing anything to help the railroad.

Masson asked if there were safety concerns and who would use this with the response being there would not be a “hum” and it would be used by other utilities.

    2. Presentation of Iowa DNR Real Time Technical Assistance (RTTA) analysis of potential mitigation strategies:

Cris Kahla and Dan Kurley provided input on potential improvements to address the flooding. They looked at two streams (Mason Creek and Ideal Creek), explaining they had tried to map different flow scenarios. They discussed detention basins and showed what the mapped flood hazard boundaries would look like, advising with Ideal Creek a reduction of 2,000 CFS per second would sufficiently reduce the risk for the area along 4th Street and Yorktown Pike. In addition, they stated they had looked at a mitigation project to be implemented upstream by 12th Street and while they did not isolate or propose a specific project they provided information on what the reduction should be to get a measureable impact.

Regarding Mason Creek, they stated a 1,000 CFS reduction would sufficiently reduce the flood hazard, advising the main area in question was just south of the crossing at 19th Street SE and mentioned a railroad culvert that had been blown out by previous floods, emphasizing a reduction would bring them out of the floodplain and reduce the risk.

6:51 Council Member Lee entered Council Chambers.

Jaszewski asked how it would be reduced with the response being retention would be the best. For Mason Creek a reflecting pond would really slow the water down, adding there were small things that could be done and this presentation was to provide information on that and allow them to pursue mitigation grants.

Burnett added this study provided data to allow for the pursuit of mitigation funding and information on what the next steps might be to make that better and Mayor Schickel stressed flood mitigation was an important part of strategic planning.

Adjourn: The Mayor adjourned the meeting at 6:55 P.M.

It’s been secured for quite some time now, Vance. Stop running and hiding and try to keep up. The situation is a little different between a private property owner not cleaning up his mess, and a municipality working to get funding in order.

      • Anonymous Reply Report comment

        September 16, 2021 at 1:07 pm

How do people seem to get confused on this? ‘Mason City’ isn’t building a hotel and ‘Mason City’ has nothing to do with its financing. A private developer is building a hotel and it is this private developer that is obtaining financing. Cities build streets, water plants, public pools, and sanitary sewers. They don’t build businesses or choose which specific businesses can build and where.

        • Anonymous Reply Report comment

          September 17, 2021 at 9:29 pm

Interesting. But didn’t the city hire the developer? Then fire the developer, Then hire the developer they are using currently, then let them go after the original developer offered to sweeten the deal and to drop legal action if hired again, then fired again, then the current developer was hired back again. Didn’t the city do all of that? Isn’t the city using city hall staff to go after the money that the state is putting up in matching funds?
If all of that is true the city is working on building it.

Dear god, this site finds the dumbest of the dumb in north Iowa. The city hasn’t ‘hired’ a developer to build the city a hotel. The city is the landowner who is selecting a purchaser to develop property in a manner that produces revenues in alignment with the river city Renaissance master plan.

You want to stop funding the media by shutting down a 527 group? Do you even know what a 527 group is? You seem to by referring to the wiki site but I don’t think you comprehend well. 527 Group — A tax-exempt group organized under section 527 of the Internal Revenue Code to raise money for political activities. These groups are typically parties, candidates, committees or associations organized for the purpose of influencing an issue, policy, appointment or election, be it federal, state or local. Such organizations can raise unlimited funds from individuals, corporations or labor unions, but they must register with the IRS and disclose their contributions and expenditures.
Where does it mention media? Yes, a 527 buys ads but you really think we should tell these funds where they can invest their money? That isn’t funding media either. You are still a spinner of absolute bs.

The Media Fund is a 527 group, active in U.S. politics, which supported Democrat John Kerry’s campaign for President. It was formed in 2002, and is led by Harold M. Ickes, a former aide to President Bill Clinton. Its chief fundraiser is Ellen Malcolm, a former fundraiser for EMILY’s List. Billionaire George Soros was among the largest donors to the Fund. According to the New York Times, the Media Fund raised $45 million to run issue ads in key swing states. The Media Fund is one of several 527 groups which supported Kerry; others include America Coming Together and MoveOn.org. After the election, the group experienced a dramatic drop in fundraising success; media reports speculated that major donors had given up on the organization, and were turning their attention to other, more long-term Democratic projects.

So, to get back to the original question. Are you proposing we eliminate the media fund, the PACs(which is what most 527’s are), the media itself, or just Liberal-leaning fundraisers? Or are you just for eliminating anyone who disagrees with you?

How long is the city going to have one of the MAIN paths of travel, barricaded for that creepy shyster’s, neglected building continue to collapse? Is he being fined for this? Or is he waiting for our expertly run city, to give him “historical “ funds for repairs?

There are no “historical funds for repairs” because the building is not on the National Register of Historic Places, despite Jorgensen’s attempts to mislead the public to the contrary. He wants the taxpayers to pay for his property improvements, like he always has. He’s the ultimate welfare queen.

I just looked through all the news pages on this site, (Home, Top Stories, World, Business, Politics,) and couldn’t find one, (1) story, article, about your president, Joe Biden. Surely he has done something newsworthy, hasn’t he? One would think that the left leaning news site, NIT, would report on bidens daily accomplishments, wouldn’t one?

THIS HAS BEEN DELETED ONCE ALREADY, THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE, JUST NOT ON THIS SITE.

There is a lot of good news out there. Just look for it. Besides, the present President doesn’t feel the need to be in front of the people every freaking second and Biden isn’t spouting off on twitter every 30 minutes is response to every derogatory (perceived derogatory) statement made about him. That is refreshing.
