REVIEW: Fleet Farm car wash
★ ★ out of 5
Made a stop Friday evening at the Mason City Fleet Farm car wash (3200 4th Street SW) to wash a little dirt off the SUV. It’s got a nice central location on the busiest road in town, and it was a convenience stop for me. The pay station that greets you as you drive up to the wash is astonishingly annoying. The screen shows a woman with a child; kind of a computer-animated guide to getting you started. She talks very loud and won’t shut up. The directions just to pay are hard to follow as the woman blares her voice in your face; my son, who was with me, thought it was pretty hilarious as I yelled back at the women to shut her pie hole so I wold pay already. There are several options to choose from; I chose the basic $6.00 wash since my ride wasn’t all that dirty. All this distraction of trying to pay and tune out the psychopath on the computer screen was enough to divert my attention from the trash heap I drove my vehicle into. By the time I paid for my car wash and drove in, I happened to the dozens of pop bottles, papers, junk, debris and other assorted garbage all over the concrete surface inside the car wash. Once inside, all I could do is go through with the wash.

I got one of the soft-touch washes, with the brushes and rubbery/plastic flaps that pummel the vehicle. I chose that wash to get some dried-on bugs off the front of my SUV. The wash did pretty well. It got most of the bugs off and did a pretty decent job of leaving the car clean. The rinse and spotless-liquid application did well. The next big problem came, however, as I tried to leave the car wash. The large door at he exit closes and a huge dryer descends from the ceiling to blow the water off the vehicle. However, the door did not go up once the dryer shut off. So, I had to order my son out of the SUV to push a button just to make the door go up. It was then that I notices some of the drenched trash paper that had landed on my car during the wash. We removed that debris and looked back at the inside of the wash. What a disgusting mess.

A drive back by the wash Sunday evening showed that the bay that I had used seemed to have been “picked up” probably by employees of Fleet Farm.

I give a 2-star rating only because my SUV was decently clean for six bucks, but this could have easily been a one-star rating.
