Watch for flying arrows in some Mason City parks as bow hunting opens

MASON CITY – There will be bow hunters in some Mason City Parks beginning November 1 – so watch for flying arrows.

Applications have been accepted and permits issued by the Mason city Police Department for persons interested in bow hunting dear within designated areas of some mason city parks.

All hunters that were issued permits were required to pass proficiency testing.  Testing consisted of 10 arrows shot at target(s) from 20 yards and 10 arrows shot at target(s) from 15 yards. An 80% score was required to pass and be allowed to apply to hunt within the City Parks.

All hunters must wear the designated blaze orange vests displaying “Mason city urban bow hunter” on the back of the vest. Hunt related signage Will also be displayed along the perimeter of the hunting areas within each park. Seven permits have been issued to date.  Hunting will not be allowed at Highland Park golf course at this time as the course is still open for golfing.  Parkers Woods, Murphy Park and Georgia Hanford park will have hunters.

Bow hunting of deer on any property is allowed in the city limits with prior approval and application through the police department.
