DES MOINES – A northern Iowa man said he knew he had a winning Powerball ticket, but he had to double-check his numbers several times to learn just how much he’d won.

Dennis Horner of Hampton matched four white balls and the Powerball in Saturday’s drawing to win a $10,000 prize. And since he added the Power Play® to his easy pick purchase for an extra dollar, his winnings multiplied to $20,000.

“I started looking and at first I had three (numbers) with the Powerball and I thought, ‘Well, that’s a couple hundred bucks, that’s not too bad,’” Horner told lottery employees Monday as he claimed his prize at the lottery’s regional office in Mason City. “Well then I got to looking and I thought it might be more than that.”

So, the 70-year old retiree had his ticket verified Sunday at Casey’s, 719 Fourth St. NE in Hampton where he’d purchased his ticket just a few days prior.

“I went back in and said, ‘Hey, I think I got a big winner here,’” Horner said. “So we ran it through and yeah, $20,000! Yeah!”

Horner said he immediately called his three children and they shared in his excitement. He said his winnings will be put toward bills.

The winning numbers in that night’s $40 million jackpot drawing were: 6-26-33-44-46 and Powerball 4. The Power Play number was 2. No one won that night’s jackpot, so Wednesday’s jackpot rolls to an estimated $50 million.
