College kid cuffed for climbing into squad car and commanding ride from cop

IOWA CITY – A college kid in Iowa City got more than he bargained for when he demanded a ride from a cop and climbed into the back of a police car.

According to a report from University of Iowa police, 18-year-old John Louis Chapman approached a police officer while walking into traffic and wanted a ride to his dorm. The officer directed Chapman to go back to the sidewalk. Instead, Chapman opened the rear door of the officer’s squad car and got in.

The police officer reacted and investigated Chapman’s sobriety; the report says Chapman had bloodshot, watery eyes and smelled of ingested alcohol. A preliminary breath test revealed he had a blood alcohol content of .236 percent.

Chapman was arrested for public intoxication and given a ride to jail.
