CLIVE, IOWA – A Mason City man said he needed confirmation that he’d won a big lottery prize before he started to celebrate.

Travis Ulrich, 44, claimed the fifth of 65 top prizes of $30,000 available in the Iowa Lottery’s “Bonus Crossword” scratch game.

Ulrich said he purchased his winning ticket June 24 at Tobacco Outlet Plus, 2480 Fourth St. SW in Mason City, and scratched it off the same day.

“I had to go check it at a gas station, thought it was like $300,” Ulrich told lottery employees Thursday as he claimed his prize at the lottery’s regional office in Mason City.

Ulrich said he kept news of his big win a secret until he claimed his prize from the lottery.

“I haven’t even told my Mom yet,” he said. “She’ll be excited.”

Ulrich said his lottery winnings will be put toward bills.

Bonus Crossword is a $3 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in the ticket’s puzzle. If a player uncovers 10 words, they win $30,000. Players can also win a prize by uncovering all five letters in the “Bonus Word” prize box. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.55.

Fifty-eight top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Bonus Crossword, as well as 123 prizes of $3,000 and thousands of prizes between $300 and $100.

I wonder if by “put towards bills” Travis really means paying off fines for he and his wife (member of Flores family) and/or support drug & alcohol addictions. Things that make ya go hmmmz…

Glad somebody won.

Congratulations! Love to see a fellow lotto player win.
