From Rep. Sharon Steckman –
I am pleased to announce that this week House Democratic Leader Mark Smith of Marshalltown reappointed me to the Midwestern Higher Education Compact Committee.
“As a former educator and member of the House Education Committee, Rep. Steckman will be a great asset to the Midwestern Higher Education Compact Committee. Her experience getting students prepared to further their education in the classroom will help us improve the higher education system here in Iowa,” Smith said.
The Midwestern Higher Education Compact (MHEC), was founded in 1991 as a nonprofit regional organization serving Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. The MHEC Committee mission is to expand and improve opportunities in higher education across the Midwest. Each member state appoints five individuals to a 60-member governing body of legislators, higher education leaders, and governors’ representatives.
The committee also identifies the need for higher education programs including:
- Promotion of improved student access, affordability and completion;
- Reduction of operational costs;
- Analyzing public policy and facilitate information exchange;
- Encouraging quality programs and services.
I look forward to serving another term on the Midwestern Higher Education Compact Committee. We must continue to make sure that Iowa students have access to affordable education after high school so they can be prepared to enter the workforce.
