MASON CITY – Mason City police caught a Northwood man allegedly driving drunk through town this past weekend.
A Mason City police officer initiated a traffic stop of a vehcile at 2:36 AM on Saturday, March 14 at 7th Street NE and Federal Avenue. During the traffic stop and ensuing investigation, the officer determined that the driver, 21-year-old Damian Scott Lapoint of Northwood was intoxicated. He was then arrested on charges of no insurance, open container of alcohol, and failure to obey a stop sign. He was taken to the county jail, booked and released as he awaits an April 4, 2015 preliminary hearing.
Lapoint was caught drunk driving on August 24, 2014 by a Cerro Gordo deputy. In January, he pleaded guilty to first offense drunk driving. He was accused in that incident of driving through a stop sign, driving with an open container of booze and having no insurance, but those charges were dropped in exchange for the guilty plea.
Lapoint is currently facing a felony second degree theft charge in Mitchell county. He entered a guilty lea in Janaury and is awaiting a sentencing hearing on April 14.
