Killer of Mason City man sent to prison for quarter of century

ST. PAUL – A Minnesota man was sentenced to 25 and a half years in prison for the shooting death of a former Mason City man.

Lyle Marvin “Ty” Hoffman, age 45, committed a homicide on August 11, 2014 at a Arden Hills, Minnesota Holiday Gas Station. He fired three gunshots and killed 48-year-old Kelly Phillips, formerly of Mason City.

Two months ago, Hoffman pleaded guilty to second degree intentional murder and had been awaiting sentencing. A Minnesota judge sent him to prison for 25 and a half years on Tuesday.

The killer, Hoffman, and his victim, Phillips, were engaged in a relationship that spanned about 15 years and were also business partners who owned a bar together. Phillips had allegedly fired Hoffman and, according to the Minneapolis Start-Tribune, had evicted him from a house.
