Sheriff reports scam attempt that puts personal information in jeaopardy

scam-alertMASON CITY – Law enforcement is warning of another possible scam in the area.

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office says there is a phone scam operating in the area at this time. A concerned local citizen reported to the sheriff’s office that a caller made contact with a citizen and warned the citizen that their computer is infected with viruses and that the caller works with a company that can detect and eliminate that kind of problem. The caller then requests information about the computer so they can gain access to it, thereby potentially gaining access to the citizen’s personal information.

It is warned that the scammer will steal personal information and potentially wipe the computer clean of data.

The sheriff’s office says that the caller’s web site, phone, name are all bogus and the caller cannot be reached. They advise that if you receive this kind of call, to contact local law enforcement.
