Former Charles City man shot dead in Des Moines

DES MOINES – A former Charles City man was shot and killed in Des Moines this weekend, and a suspect is in jail on a charge of murder in the first degree.

The Des Moines Police Communications Center received a call at 5:09 PM on Sunday, March 1, concerning a possible homicide at 321 E. Diehl Avenue in Des Moines. Des Moines Patrol Officers responded and while en route to that location they were informed that the suspect was inside the residence of 325 E. Diehl.

Officers first checked the 321 E. Diehl address and found a 35-year-old male victim inside the residence dead from gunshot wounds. A short time later, police dispatchers were able to make contact, by phone, with the 30-year-old male suspect. He surrendered peacefully to officers on scene and was taken to the Des Moines Police Department for questioning by detectives who responded to assist.

The victim of the shooting has been identified as Mark Edward Hruska, formerly of Charles City. He was shot and killed by Patrick William Kirwan who has been booked into the Polk County Jail charged with murder in the first degree.  Mr. Hruska was born in Charles City and attended school there, graduating from High School in 1998.
