Authorities say two North Iowa men cheated in fishing tourney

CLEAR LAKE – Two North Iowa men were in the Cerro Gordo County Jail after it was alleged that they somehow cheated in a fishing tournament held at Clear Lake this month.

According to the Clear Lake Yellow Bass Bonanza – a fishing tournament held on February 8, 2015 – cheating by the two winning competitors may have occurred. The tournament featured teams of two persons who could catch up to 50 fish and then turn in their weight total.

“After the tournament, it was brought to our attention that cheating may have occurred,” organizers of the event said. “We immediately contacted authorities. As with any investigation, we are limited on what we can comment on at this time.”

The first-place prize was worth about $1,500 or more.

Authorities have arrested the two men who won the tournament: Aaron Lauber, age 23 of Clear Lake and Jason Schuttler, age 25 of Manly. The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office says both men face a charge of second degree theft.

Clear Lake Yellow Bass Bonanza offials say they are working to sort out the situation.

“Once this issue has been fully resolved .. we will address the questions regarding tournament standings,” organizers said. “We are very disappointed that this great event has been over shadowed by the DISHONESTY (their emphasis) of these 2 individuals.”
