Shots fired by Iowa cop after hit-and-run incident

gunDAVENPORT – A black BMW with a driver inside caused a series of accidents in Davenport Wednesday evening, leading to a pursuit by police and shot being fired at a suspect.

Davenport police reported that on Wednesday February 4, 2015 at approximately 4:52 PM, an emergency call was made regarding a hit and run accident in the area of 35th Street and Marquette. The vehicle which fled the scene was described as a black BMW which had struck two vehicles. This information was broadcast to Davenport Police Department Patrol Units along with periodic information on the location of the vehicle as one of the victims was attempting to keep emergency dispatchers updated on the location.

An Officer was able to locate the vehicle in the area of Central Park and Harrison and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle turned south on Scott Street where it struck yet another vehicle. With the fully marked squad car stopped behind the suspect vehicle, the uniformed police officer exited the squad and began giving verbal commands to the driver who was exiting the vehicle. These verbal commands were not followed and subsequently led to a shot being fired at the driver. No injuries occurred as a result of the shot being fired.

The driver was taken into custody at the scene of the stop. Two passengers in the vehicle were transported to the Davenport Police Department to be interviewed by the Scott County Sheriff’s Office.

The name of the police officer involved in the incident is not being released at this time, out of courtesy of notification being made to the family first. The officer has been placed on administrative leave as directed by department policy.

As a Davenport Police Department protocol, the Scott County Sheriff’s Office was notified and will investigate the incident.
