MASON CITY – Downtown Mason City was dealt another blow Thursday when it was announced that a Southbridge Mall anchor, JC Penney, is closing.

A JC Penney spokesman told NIT today that the store located in Southbridge Mall since 1985 is, indeed, closing.

“We continually evaluate our store portfolio to determine whether there’s a need to close or relocate underperforming stores,” JCPenney Media Relations’ Carter English told NIT. “Reviews such as these are essential in meeting our long-term goals for future company growth. While it’s never an easy decision to close stores, especially due to the impact on our valued associates and customers, we feel this is a necessary business decision.

“We will be closing approximately 40 stores Company-wide over the next year, which represents less than four percent of our total store base,” Mr. English continued. “Most locations will close on or about April 4, 2015. After the announced closures take place, JCPenney will have approximately 1,020 locations across 49 states and Puerto Rico.

Approximately 2,250 associates nationwide are impacted by the closures. Eligible associates who do not remain with the company will receive separation benefits, and, if possible, we will assist associates in identifying other job opportunities at nearby JCPenney stores. Additionally, we’re offering all associates an on-site career training class. The class will assist associates in writing resumes, filling out applications, answering interview questions and more.”

Earlier this week, it was announced that the American Eagle store in the mall would close.

On December 31, Jitters Coffee Bar served its last cup of coffee in Southbridge. That shop stayed in the downtown area and moved to a nearby building at the corner of 4th Street SW and Washington Avenue.
