NIACC women’s basketball team ranked second

MASON CITY – Still No. 2.

The NIACC women’s basketball team remained No. 2 in the NJCAA Division II poll released Wednesday.

NIACC (9-1 overall) topped Riverland CC 87-59 on Dec. 10. Freshman Logan Anderson led the Lady Trojans with 27 points.

NIACC was ranked seventh in the preseason poll and moved to No. 2 in the Dec. 3 poll.

The top 5 in this week’s poll remained the same. Johnson County CC (15-0) is ranked first, Illinois Central (9-1) is No. 3, Parkland College (11-1) is No. 4 and Owens CC (10-1) is No. 5.

It is the 15th consecutive poll that the NIACC women have been ranked in the top 10. The Lady Trojans entered the polls in the 2013-14 season at No. 3 in the second poll of the season and remained in the top three for the remainder of the season.

Last season, the NIACC women were ranked No. 1 in seven polls, spent three weeks at No. 2 and one week at No. 3.

NIACC returns to action Dec. 28 at the Illinois Central holiday tournament. The Lady Trojans face Cincinnati State Technical and CC (7-7) in their opening round contest.

NIACC topped Cincinnati State 85-79 in the second round of the NJCAA Division II national tournament last season.

Also at the Illinois Central tournament will be No. 3 Illinois Central, No. 7 Kirkwood, No. 15 Pima CC and No. 16 South Suburban College.
