MASON CITY – Two free classes are being offered for anyone who is considering starting a business.

Start Smart is being offered by North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC), the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), the Mason City Chamber of Commerce, Main Street Mason City and North Iowa Corridor. Participants will learn how to create a business plan, do market research, consider different types of business ownership and learn how to register a business.

Start Smart:

  • Tuesday, December 16 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the North Iowa Commerce Center on 9 N Federal, Mason City.
  • Friday, December 19 from 10:00 a.m. – Noon at the NIACC John Pappajohn Business Center in room PC 224 on the second floor.

“The activities involved in starting a business fall under two broad categories—feasibility, which is the business plan, and administrative tasks,” said Brook Boehmler, SBDC Director. “While we like to focus on the feasibility issue, Smart Start provides information and the chance to ask questions on numerous other topics.”

Those include:

  • Business Registration
  • Doing Customer research
  • How Bankers Evaluate Business Concepts and Loans
  • Start-up Costs
  • Business Plan tips
  • and More

After attending Start Smart, Small Business Development Center (SBDC) staff will be available by appointment to assist you in reviewing your business plan, or to provide guidance with other issues. To register, contact Brook Boehmler, SBDC Director at NIACC: 641-422-4342.

The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration. Reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities will be made if requested at least two weeks in advance.
