Mason City man pleads guilty to serious assault connected to summer melee on Monroe

MASON CITY – A guilty plea has been entered in a serious assault case against a man in connection to a rumble that stretched several blocks along Monroe Avenue this past summer.

Benny Marc Montgomery, age 30, pleaded guilty today to assault causing serious injury. He had been due in court last week for a pre-trial conference but failed to show up, and a warrant for his arrest was issued. He was brought to jail after his guilty plea. His sentence has not yet been disclosed, and he is being held in jail on $1,000 bond.

Montgomery still faces a charge of unlawful assembly from that incident. He awaits an April 15, 2015 trial. He already plead guilty to disorderly conduct – fighting or violent behavior, also connected to that incident. He was ordered to pay $214.50 in fines and court fees on that charge.

On August 6, 2014, trouble erupted in the surrounding area of newly-opened liquor store near 1st Street NW and Monroe Avenue. Several persons were arrested as fights broke out blocks apart. There were some injuries.  Throngs of people gathered to watch the police try to sort out the drama.
