MASON CITY – The Iowa State wrestling team took to the mat for the first time this season, kicking off their 2014-15 campaign at the NIACC Kaye Young Open with a dominant showing in Mason City, Iowa.
It was all Cardinal and Gold today. Iowa State took home all 10 individual titles, sending 27 wrestlers to the quarterfinals, 24 to the semifinals and claiming 18 of the 20 possible spots in the title matches.
At 125, it was redshirt-sophomore Kyle Larson taking home the title. Larson went 4-0 on the day. He recorded a fall in his first match of the day, pinning Deshun Brown of Ellsworth in 1:45. He faced unattached-freshmanNathan Boston in the finals, beating him 3-1 to claim his title.
Junior All-American Earl Hall made his debut at 133 today. Hall pinned Camron Halton of Lincoln College in his first match en route to the finals. Hall went on to defeat teammate RJHallman 10-5 in the 133 final.
Freshman Dante Rodriguez competed unattached for Iowa State but worked to the top of the podium. Rodriguez cruised through the bracket at 141, recording four falls and a major decision. In the finals, he pinned Ellsworth’s Saidyokub Kakhramanov in 2:05.
Redshirt-sophomore Gabe Moreno also took home a crown today. Moreno posted a 5-0 record at 149, including four pins. He defeated Blayne Briceno in the finals by fall at 2:37.
Luke Goettl also notched an individual title today. The Clarkdale, Arizona, native won his first four matches with ease, posting a two falls, a tech fall and a major decision. He met Daniel Woiwor in the finals, and got the 3-1 decision to win the 157 bracket.
Redshirt-senior and two-time All-American Michael Moreno was victorious at the Kaye Young Open today. He recorded two falls and won his other two matches with a combined score of 40-8. In the 165 finals, Moreno defeated Logan Breitenback 20-4.
Tanner Weatherman went 4-0 en route to the 174 crown. He started out the day with back-to-back falls coasting to the semifinals. There, he didn’t yield a single point, getting the tech fall over ILCC’s Elijah Dennis 16-0. He then recorded another tech fall in the finals when he beat Sadarriss Patterson of Ellsworth 18-3.
Lelund Weatherspoon was the champion at 184. He went 4-0 on the day, garnering two tech fall wins and a pin in the first round. He won the title by forfeit over Iowa State’s Duke Egli.
At 197, it was all Kyven Gadson. The All-American pinned his first two opponents with ease, and then rolled to a 16-1 tech fall victory in the semifinals. Freshman Marcus Harrington was Gadson’s opponent in the final. Gadson took it Harrington, getting the major decision, 12-3.
Redshirt-sophomore Quean Smith was the champion at 285. Smith pinned his first three opponents on his way to the championship match. In the finals, Smith got the 7-3 decision over teammate Tyler Swope.
Iowa State will return home next weekend, as they play host to the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open on Saturday, Nov. 8.
