Man who allegedly tortured dog accepts plea deal

MASON CITY – A Mason City man who was accused of torturing a dog and stuffing its lifeless body in a bag has accepted a plea deal to lesser charges and will get a stay in the Beje Clark halfway house.

Dacota Witham, age 27, this week pled guilty to animal neglect, child endangerment and second offense domestic abuse. He had been charged with child endangerment, felony third or subsequent domestic assault and animal torture.

Witham was ordered to stay in the Beje Clark halfway house for 180 days and two years of probation. All prison sentences and fines were suspended.  He was ordered to pay several hundred dollars in court costs and fees.

Witham allegedly left his 7-month-old daughter home alone in August along with the domestic assault incident. In addition, he is accused of torturing a female dog named Kiara that police found stuffed in a bag inside his garage.
