MASON CITY – Police have made arrests after a rash of crimes across the city were reported and investigated, including a beating last week that put a teen in the hospital with severe injuries.

Police arrested three teens Thursday night at about 10 PM at the 600 block of North Delaware Avenue. The teens were allegedly dressed in black and shooting cars with bb or pellet guns. The teens had been wanted since earlier that evening, when a theft of over $300 in clothing was reported at the Buckle clothing store in Southbridge Mall. Police were able to apprehend the three wanted individuals, 13-year-old Darrius Rashawn Bolden, 15-year-old Travis John Ulrich and 16-year-old Rudy Huerta.

Ulrich and Bolden also had marijuana in their possession and were charged with possession of a controlled substance. Police had knowledge that these three individuals were suspected in other serious criminal offenses and were prior juvenile offenders. They were placed in temporary detention after they were booked into the Cerro Gordo County Jail.

Police also said that they have been investigating a pattern of organized criminal activity by local juveniles. The investigation soon identified a a core group of individuals with a small group of associates who were committing the escalating offenses, which involved assaults, riotous behavior, robbery, thefts, and criminal gang participation. NIT was told the group loosely called itself the “Young Lords”. These criminal acts were committed in the Mason City area primarily upon other middle school and high school students and classmates both on and off school property. School officials cooperated with the police investigation and on October 10, a fourth juvenile was arrested by Mason City police alleged to have committed several of the acts in convert with Bolden, Ulrich and Huerta. Arrested was 16-year-old Karl Aaron Karzin of Mason City. Once he was in custody, all four arrested juveniles had the following charges added:

Bolden: 2 counts of second degree robbery; 2 counts of criminal gang participation; on-going criminal conduct; riot and serious assault

Ulrich: 2 counts of second degree robbery; 2 counts of criminal gang participation; on-going criminal conduct; riot and serious assault

Karzin: 2 counts of second degree robbery, 2 counts of criminla gang participation and on-going criminal conduct (he was jailed)

One of the beatings allegedly perpetrated by this group of teens took place last Saturday, October 4 around 5 PM at the Ray Rorick Skate Park.  The teens challenged another teen who was skating there to a fight.  He refused, and when he turned his back was struck numerous times until he was unconscious.  According to a family member who reported the incident to NIT, the teens continued to strike him after he was knocked out.  He was hospitalized with serious injuries.
