MASON CITY – Police have made arrests after a rash of crimes across the city were reported and investigated, including a beating last week that put a teen in the hospital with severe injuries.

Police arrested three teens Thursday night at about 10 PM at the 600 block of North Delaware Avenue. The teens were allegedly dressed in black and shooting cars with bb or pellet guns. The teens had been wanted since earlier that evening, when a theft of over $300 in clothing was reported at the Buckle clothing store in Southbridge Mall. Police were able to apprehend the three wanted individuals, 13-year-old Darrius Rashawn Bolden, 15-year-old Travis John Ulrich and 16-year-old Rudy Huerta.

Ulrich and Bolden also had marijuana in their possession and were charged with possession of a controlled substance. Police had knowledge that these three individuals were suspected in other serious criminal offenses and were prior juvenile offenders. They were placed in temporary detention after they were booked into the Cerro Gordo County Jail.

Police also said that they have been investigating a pattern of organized criminal activity by local juveniles. The investigation soon identified a a core group of individuals with a small group of associates who were committing the escalating offenses, which involved assaults, riotous behavior, robbery, thefts, and criminal gang participation. NIT was told the group loosely called itself the “Young Lords”. These criminal acts were committed in the Mason City area primarily upon other middle school and high school students and classmates both on and off school property. School officials cooperated with the police investigation and on October 10, a fourth juvenile was arrested by Mason City police alleged to have committed several of the acts in convert with Bolden, Ulrich and Huerta. Arrested was 16-year-old Karl Aaron Karzin of Mason City. Once he was in custody, all four arrested juveniles had the following charges added:

Bolden: 2 counts of second degree robbery; 2 counts of criminal gang participation; on-going criminal conduct; riot and serious assault

Ulrich: 2 counts of second degree robbery; 2 counts of criminal gang participation; on-going criminal conduct; riot and serious assault

Huerta: 2 counts of second degree robbery; 2 counts of criminal gang participation; on-going criminal conduct; riot and serious assault; disorderly conduct, trespass, simple assault, felony willful injury

Karzin: 2 counts of second degree robbery, 2 counts of criminla gang participation and on-going criminal conduct (he was jailed)

One of the beatings allegedly perpetrated by this group of teens took place last Saturday, October 4 around 5 PM at the Ray Rorick Skate Park.  The teens challenged another teen who was skating there to a fight.  He refused, and when he turned his back was struck numerous times until he was unconscious.  According to a family member who reported the incident to NIT, the teens continued to strike him after he was knocked out.  He was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Free the guys <3 i love you guys.

Why was only one jailed???

These are the kinds of things that happen when children are allowed to become feral.

Cane these boys like they do in Singapore. After afew good ass whippings with a cane stick they’d stop.

Very sad and at the same time maddening that the some of the children in our community engage in these activities. I am sure if you were to research each child you would find that parents and or parent are not in their lives, in jail or drug addicts. Or the parent who stands up for the child no matter what and they never learn right from wrong. They have no boundaries. I hope our system will do the right thing. NO TOLERENCE for this behavior.

@Jody-at least three of them are familiar names on the jail roster so these kids learned this at home from criminal and uncaring parents. One of them is an import and probably learned this type of gang action on the streets of Chitcago. It was just a matter of time until that crap showed up on our streets. I hope they make an example of these little criminals and throw the book at them.

Rudy Huerta comes from a long line of criminals in his family. He knows nothing else. And of course he is following in the family trade. I don’t know the other kids. But it’s time this behavior stops. These kids do not belong in the public school system. They don’t belong in the alternative system either. They need to be locked up somewhere where they can’t hurt others.

Some girls are just more dangerous than boys.

These 4 boys and the others they are associated with are not kids who hangout at the skatepark. They just chose to go there and start problems with the kids who were there. This started 2 weeks ago when these boys showed up at the skatepark and decide to beat up a group of girls. And then chased them down with weapons to east park. Police involved then too. It just escalated from there and these boys(and others) continued to beat up kids that stood up to them for hitting a girls.

Have no fear…your capable juvenile court officers are ready to do….nothing!

Rudy Huerta, on his way to a life of crime, like other family members….

That is right and many generations of disfunction in this family, have any of the men ever stood up for their families and stayed out of jail.No this sh*t goes way back.I know lived here for over 40yrs.This family are slow at learning right from wrong.C’MON some man in that family needs to step and change they they go about life.

Should of said at end.And change the way they go about life.

Put them all in jail until they are of legal age. Make their parent’s (if they can find them) pay for all damages. Some of these names are real familiar.
