MASON CITY – A Mason City woman struck a light pole this week, causing thousands of dollars in damage to her vehicle.

On Wednesday, October 1 at about 6:24 PM, a Mason City police officer was dispatched to a reportable one vehicle collision at the Southport shopping center parking lot.

At the scene, an NIT reader reported that “I heard a loud ‘BOOM’ and thought ‘what the heck?’  I saw the black SUV against the pole, radiator fluid was gushing onto the ground.  A lady was sitting inside it.”

Rhonda Balkenende collided with a light pole while pulling into a parking space in the Southport shopping center parking lot. Balkenende’s vehicle was disabled, and damage was estimated to be $5,000.

Balkenende was not injured in the accident.

Texting and driving…it don’t work!

Be on the lookout for those large yellow and red things, they will jump in front of you.

Looks like Sears parking lot. Are they still open?

Breaking news.

Pretty big parking lot with only a few poles. She must have really had to work at it to hit one.

I hope she wasn’t out there getting her dr. lic. renewed. Not a good start.
