Hawkeye cross country teams compete at Notre Dame Invite

logo_iowa_hawkeyesSOUTH BEND, Indiana – Sophomore Carolyn Newhouse and senior Kevin Lewis paced the University of Iowa cross country teams at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday.

Newhouse led the Hawkeye women to a seventh place finish in the women’s Gold Division, finishing the 5,000-meter race in 17:39 to place 35th. She is the fourth different Hawkeye to lead Iowa in as many races.

Freshman Marta Bote Gonzalez (17:43) and sophomore Tess Wilberding (17:44) placed 43rd and 45th, respectively. Crossing the line together were sophomore Katie Adams and junior Jocelyn Todd. The pair finished .2 seconds apart (17:47) to finish 48th and 49th, respectively. Junior Courtney Martin also contributed to Iowa’s score (56th/17:52).

“I thought it was a solid overall effort for the women,” head coach Layne Anderson said. “For whatever reason, we are falling short of that breakout race. We haven’t yet put it all together to have a big group break. We are running well as a pack, but we need to work on moving the pack up in the race. Our top finisher needs to cross the line sooner.”

Lewis was Iowa’s top finisher for the seventh consecutive race. The senior placed 31st overall, completing the five-mile course in 23:54 to lead Iowa to a 16th place finish in the men’s Blue Division. The Hawkeyes received a 63rd place finish from sophomore Ben Anderson, who clocked 24:18. Sophomores Anthony Gregorio (102nd/24:33), Kevin Docherty (114th/24:39), and Taylor Soltys (117th/24:40) rounded out Iowa’s scoring.

“We weren’t as sharp today,” Anderson said. “[Witt], who is usually our number three guy, was our number six guy today. Lewis was up there with the leaders, but faded the last mile. That was probably a 20-point swing. Overall, I thought we missed out on a real opportunity to race against some nationally ranked teams.”

The Hawkeyes return to action on Oct. 18 for the Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Indiana.
