Future of Madison School up for discussion next week

MASON CITY – Mason City School District is looking to make a decision on the future of Madison School – the last of the “older” school buildings still standing – and is accepting input from the public next week.

The Board of Education, in conjunction with their strategic planning process, will hold a meeting to discuss plans for the future of Madison Elementary. This meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 2, from 6-7 p.m. at Madison Elementary, located at 2620 South Jefferson Avenue.  Community members are invited to attend and share input about their wishes for the future of this facility.

The school was most recently used for seventh graders as renovations were underway at John Adams Middle School and the High School. The former elementary school served seventh graders for the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years.

Some community activists want to see the school saved and used as a multi-purpose venue.  Others say the school is too far out-dated and repairs would be costly.

Perhaps in an effort to begin to deal with accusations in the community that the school district lacks transparency and openness, the board will then hola a discussion on developing communication and transparency planning.

Really, it should be torn down. It would be tough to renovate and the system would be better off getting rid of the building and selling the land to a developer for new housing to fit into that area.

It’s in my neighborhood. I’d like it to be senior housing.

@Anonymous-Now that is a good idea as long as it is affordable. Makes good sense.

Can you clarify what you mean by “affordable?”

@Anonymous-Affordable means different thing to different people doesn’t it?

Yes it does, which is why I asked what you meant. Can’t continue the conversation without knowing.

@Anonymous-I mean it should be affordable to everyone, not just the low income people. The prices on everything continue to rise for all of us, not just low income subsidized folk.

It sure seems to me that they had made a decision to tear it down years ago. Then someone had a better idea and they moved a headstart into one room and cost us thousands of dollars to maintain the building and grounds. Tear it down. It is not worth keeping.

Don’t worry, someone will come along that will want to spend someone else’s money.

put up some more low rent housing and ruin another good neighborhood with assaults and thefts just a lot of crime

I think it’s a done deal. Anita wants to tear it down. The rubber stamp board will dutifully allow her to do it.
