Possible illegal alien held at jail

MASON CITY – A man showing no immediate record as an American citizen was brought to the Cerro Gordo County Jail Thursday evening.

Antonio Augilar, age 33, was booked into the jail at 7:27 PM on charges of no valid driver’s license, no insurance, and operating a non-registered vehicle.

He is being held on no bond on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) order.

Typically, when brought to jail, a person’s status as a citizen is checked through the normal booking process. If an issue is detected with the person’s status as a citizen, ICE may ask the jail to put a 48 hour hold on the inmate.  ICE may then begin removal proceedings against the person in question should they desire to do so, and the person can apply to stay in the U.S. as well or ask to see an immigration judge.
