IOWA CITY – The championship rounds of the 2K Classic benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project begin with the University of Iowa squaring off against Texas, followed by Syracuse versus California in a semifinal doubleheader at Madison Square Garden on Thursday, Nov. 20.
After playing a pair of regional games on campus, the four schools will travel to New York for the championship rounds of the 2K Classic. In the first game, the Hawkeyes and Longhorns tipoff at 6 p.m. (CT). The Golden Bears and Orange play the nightcap at approximately 8:30 p.m. (CT). Both contests will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
The winners will meet for the 2K Classic championship on Friday, Nov. 21 on ESPN2, preceded by the consolation game at 4 p.m. (CT) on either ESPN2 or ESPNU.
The four teams participating in the championship rounds of the 2K Classic, have combined for 109 NCAA Tournament appearances.
Iowa and Texas have played four times on neutral floors, with each team winning twice. The Hawkeyes posted wins in 1992 (Greensboro, North Carolina) and 2004 (Maui, Hawaii), while the Longhorns recorded victories in 2005 and 2009 — both games contested in Kansas City, Missouri.
Iowa leads the all-time series against California, 6-4, which includes the longest game in Iowa basketball history. The Hawkeyes outlasted the Golden Bears, 83-80, in four overtimes in 1960. Iowa and Syracuse have met only twice before, with the Hawkeyes winning both contests in 1957 and 1980.
The Hawkeyes last visited Madison Square Garden in the 2013 National Invitation Tournament. Iowa bounced Maryland in the semifinals before falling to Baylor in the championship game.
The remainder of Iowa’s 2014-15 schedule will be announced at a later date.
