FORT MADISON, IOWA – The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation continues its investigation into the officer involved shooting that occurred during the early morning hours of August 3, 2014, in Fort Madison, Iowa.
Fort Madison Police Officer Karl Judd responded to a call of an individual with a knife in the 1400 blk of Ave D and Ave E. Ryan Swearingen fled the scene and a short time later and confronted Officer Judd with a knife while exiting a closet from within the residence of 1527 Ave E Ft. Madison. Officer Judd shot Swearingen who died as a result of the injuries sustained during the incident.
An autopsy was performed at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner on the body of Ryan Swearingen, on August 4, 2014, by Dr. Michele Catellier, who determined the cause of death to be multiple gunshots.
Fort Madison Police Officer Karl Judd has been placed on paid administrative leave, pursuant to Fort Madison Police Departments’ policy related to Officer Involved Shootings. The investigation is ongoing.
