IOWA CITY – This college town isn’t number two on the nation’s top party schools list for no reason, and a man from the Twin Cities area helped Iowa City live up to that reputation over the weekend as he created distractions to protect his frat brothers who were allegedly smoking weed and drinking under age.
According to police reports, a man from Lakeville, Minnesota who apparently now lives in Iowa City, attempted to protect his frat brothers at the Sigma Nu fraternity by breaking windows and stealing a police car.
On Saturday night, August 2, police were called to the area of the 500 block of North Dubuque Street on reports of windows being broken. The Iowa City Press-Citizen reported that as police were investigating, an Iowa City police officer left a patrol car running, with the keys in the ignition, to investigate. The suspect who was breaking windows then entered the vehicle and drove away. Police soon caught and stopped the vehicle. The man behind the wheel, 20-year-old Aaron Griffin Tyler, admitted that he was causing distractions for police to protect his friends at the Sigma Nu fraternity, located at 630 North Dubuque Street, whom he said were “drinking under age and smoking marijuana.”
On its website, Sigma Nu calls itself a “fraternity dedicated to developing ethical leaders inspired by the principles of Love, Truth, and Honor.”
Reports show that Tyler was then arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated, felony criminal mischief, and operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent. Tyler posted bond and was released from jail pending an upcoming court date.
