Ames police make arrest in drunk driving hit and run case

AMES – A man who allegedly caused a serious accident that caused life-threatening injuries to another driver has turned himself in to Ames police after an investigation and charges were filed.

Ames police Commander Geoff Huff said in a statement released Friday, August 1 that on Friday, July 4, 2014, the Ames Police Department received a report of a serious accident on Highway 30 at the eastbound Duff Avenue exit ramp. When officers arrived, they found a vehicle had been struck, flipped as it left the roadway, and ejected the driver. The driver, identified as Manuel Rodriguez Rocha, age 22, suffered life threatening injuries and was transported to a Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Witnesses at the scene said a grey Nissan Pathfinder made an unsafe lane change striking the victim’s vehicle causing the accident and continued down the exit ramp. Another witness was able to provide the license plate number of the Pathfinder. Officers located the vehicle at Lowes Department Store located at 120 Airport Road. They also located the driver of the vehicle, Craig Troy Christman, age 53, of Ames. There was damage on the Christman’s vehicle consistent with the collision on Highway 30.

Christman was questioned by investigators and denied involvement, but did admit to driving the route where the accident occurred. Christman failed field sobriety tests and tested over .08% BAC on a preliminary breath test on July 4. Christman consented to chemical testing and the results were recently received showing a BAC of .154%.

Investigators obtained arrest warrants for Christman for the following charges:
– Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Serious Injury, 321.261, a serious misdemeanor
– Serious Injury by Vehicle, 707.6A(4), a Class “D” Felony
– Operating While Intoxicated, 1st Offense, 321J.2, a serious misdemeanor
– Unsafe Lane Change, 321.306, a simple misdemeanor

Christman turned himself in at the Ames Police Department this morning and was transported to the Story County Jail for processing.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
