Henkel’s Schmit is point-man for North Iowa Corridor’s search for CEO

MASON CITY – Anyone interested in becoming the next President and CEO of the North Iowa Corridor should contact Gary Schmit at his office at Henkel Construction.

According to an email sent by the city of Mason City on Tuesday, the North Iowa Corridor Economic Development Corporation is seeking an “experienced economic developer” to serve as President and CEO.  The last man in the position, Brent Willett, resigned in March for a better job in Des Moines.  The city of Mason City contributes about $126,000 in fiscal year 2014-2015 to the Corridor.  The Corridor is a public-private entity; it takes public dollars, but avoids saying  how those dollars are spent.

In the job posting, the North Iowa Corridor EDC claims to be “a regional economic development organization in North Central Iowa representing the cities of Mason City [pop. 28,000], Clear Lake [pop. 10,000] and Greater Cerro Gordo County.”   The Corridor fudged those numbers; the actual populations are 27,704 for Mason City and 7,777 for Clear Lake

According to the Corridor, the President & CEO “serves as a key leadership team member and reports to the Board of Directors. This position oversees all activities related to the organization’s operations. The position leads the organization towards the fulfillment of its mission and will demonstrate the highest levels of integrity, honesty and openness.”  The Corridor was recently investigated by NorthIowaToday.com and the Des Moines Register for secret deals, including a secret payment to Iowa State Football coach Paul Rhoads and an economic development project in Clear Lake.

The salary range for the position is between $100,000 – $130,000 – based on qualifications, which include:

· Seven or more years of professional experience in in economic development or related field
· International Economic Development Council Certification [CEcD] preferred
· Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred
· Experience and relationships in with State of Iowa economic development agencies, contacts and programs preferred
Essential Duties:
· Business development and attraction
· Strategic planning and program and fiscal oversight. Collaboration with the Board to define and articulate the organization’s vision and to develop strategy for achieving that vision.
· Business retention
· Community engagement and public relations by serving as the primary spokesperson for the organization and is a tireless promoter of the North Iowa region to local, statewide, national and international audiences.
· Fundraising and financial management
· Builds and effectively leads a dedicated team that is committed to the development and execution of economic development initiatives
