MASON CITY – A strong storm brought damage and fear to North Iowa Monday night, downing trees and knocking out power to thousands.
Many people took cover in their basements as tornado sirens sounded around 7 PM. There were reports of possible tornadoes in Northern and Southern Cerro Gordo county, as well as Pocahontas and Palo Alto.
Along county road B20, north of Mason City, it was reported that there was severe damage to at least one acreage there. Inside town, trees and power lines were down, widespread. Thousands were without power for hours. There were no injuries reported. Several trees had fallen on top of houses, and police and emergency responders were busy attending to citizens. It was reported a group of elderly citizens were trapped in an elevator.
One Mason City firefighter said Tuesday morning that the Monday night was “busiest day at the office in a long time. 22 medicals [and] 18 fire calls. Normal calls for a day 14.”
