Drake football and South Dakota State agree to three-game series

DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake University head football coach Rick Fox has announced a three-game series between the Bulldogs and South Dakota State starting in 2016. As part of the series, the Jackrabbits will visit Drake Stadium during the 2019 season.

“We’re excited to play a program the caliber of South Dakota State and hope that this three-game series becomes a great relationship between our two programs,” Fox said. “We’re always seeking to challenge ourselves with our non-conference schedule in preparation for competing for a Pioneer Football League championship being in the playoffs. The ability to play South Dakota State – and have them to come to our stadium – helps us prepare for those plans.”

The three-game series begins on Sept. 10, 2016 when the Bulldogs visit Brookings, S.D., to play what is slated to be the first game in South Dakota State’s new stadium. Drake returns to SDSU the following year on Sept. 16 for the second game of the series before the Jackrabbits return the favor on Sept. 14, 2019, at Drake Stadium.

The meetings will be the first between the two programs since 1983 in a series that Drake currently leads 8-2. The Jackrabbits are scheduled to be the first Missouri Valley Conference Football team to visit Drake Stadium since UNI did so during the 2007 season.

“Football fans are familiar with the competitiveness in the Missouri Valley Football Conference,” Fox added. “We’re always excited for the challenge of playing programs from a conference that has consistently proven to be one of the premier FCS conferences in the nation.
