911 call service in Story county reports failure

AMES – The Story County Sheriffs Officer reported an equipment failure this week, and upgrades to the system on the way.

On Thursday, May 22, the Story County Sheriff’s Office experienced a failure in some of the new equipment that handles 911 calls for portions of Story County. The failure was quickly remedied and systems were brought back on-line. No 911 calls were missed or lost. The underlying problem has been identified and the sheriff’s office is working with the vendor to implement an upgrade to insure that the problem will not repeat. The development and testing of the upgrade will take a few days and officials will work with the vendor through the weekend to complete the work. The sheriff’s office does not anticipate any problems with 911 calls but the public should be aware that if they experience a disconnect on a 911 call, they should immediately call back.

Although the Emergency Communication Centers at Ames and Iowa State University have not experienced the same failure, they are on the same system and the potential for difficulty exists at those call centers as well. The upgrade will be applied at all three locations.
