NIACC’s Koob begins play in national golf tournament today

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NIACC freshman Kaitlin Koob tees off at 12:40 p.m. today in the opening round of the NJCAA national women’s golf tournament at the LPGA International Golf Club Hills Course.

Koob will also play rounds at the national tournament on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Koob, who prepped at Nashua-Plainfield, qualified for the national tournament with a 14th place finish at the NJCAA Region XI meet in Ankeny on April 25-26.

It’s the eighth straight year under NIACC coach Chris Frenz that at least one women’s golfer has qualified for the national tournament.

Koob’s 2014 spring season:
April 5-6 (Iowa Central Invitational, Otter Creek in Ankeny) – 102-100 – 202. April 11-12 (AIB Invite at Lake Panorama) – 101-93 – 194. April 25-26 (NJCAA Region XI tournament at Otter Creek in Ankeny) – 90-97 – 187.
Low 18-hole round: 90 (April 25 at Otter Creek). Low 36-hole round: 187 (April 25-26 at Otter Creek). 18-hole average (6 rounds): 97.1.

TOP NIACC FINISHES AT NATIONALS UNDER FRENZ
The following are the top five finishes at the national tournament since Chris Frenz took over the NIACC golf program in 2007:
T47. Mikayla Smith, 2012 (93-85-83-87 – 348)
T54. Alexandria Eckenrod, 2013 (87-93-90-91 – 361)
T54. Sarah Steinauer, 2013 (85-97-84-95 – 361)
T57. Alexandria Eckenrod, 2012 (91-88-96-90 – 365)
T60. Brittany O’Brien, 2009 (47-42 – 89) – Tournament was shortened to 18 holes due to rain.
