Waterloo counterfeiter arrested

investigateWATERLOO – Police investigated a rash of fake currency and a fake lottery ticket and arrested a Waterloo man on at least 10 counts of forgery.

Waterloo police reported that on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 Waterloo police charged Brett William Wehrle, age 30, of 5607 Dalton Drive, Waterloo, IA with 10 counts of Forgery for passing counterfeit $5, $10 and $20 dollar bills.  On Monday, May 5, 2014, Waterloo Police received a call from the Kum & Go Convenience Store, 117 E. San Marnan Avenue, Waterloo about a white male trying to pass a counterfeit $20.00 bill. The store refused to accept the $20.00 bill and the man left the store.

Later in the day, the same white male, wearing different clothes came back into the store to cash in a winning lottery ticket. Wehrle signed his name on the lottery ticket, collected his money and left in a silver Dodge Magnum. The store clerk called the police again. Officers checked vehicle registrations through the Iowa DOT and matched Wehrle with a silver Dodge Magnum.

A search warrant was obtained for Wehrle’s residence.  Officers served the search warrant and seized several counterfeit bills, a color scanner/printer, paper and other items used in making counterfeit money.  Wehrle admitted to passing counterfeit bills at over 20 different businesses.  So far, Wehrle has been charged with passing counterfeit bills at the following different locations:

Kum & Go Convienence Store, 117 E. San Marnan Avenue (1 count)
Fareway Store, 40 W. San Marnan Avenue (1 count)
Jim Lind Shell Station, 230 E. Ridgeway Avenue (1 count)
Walgreen’s, 111 E. Ridgeway Avenue (5 counts)
Hometown Foods, 1010 E. Mitchell Avenue (2 counts)
