Two Alaska state troopers killed in the line of duty

TANANA, Alaska – Two Alaska State Troopers were killed in Tanana today, May 1, while conducting an investigation. The Troopers responded to Tanana to follow-up on a report from last night that a subject had brandished a firearm in the village. One person has been detained. The details surrounding the deaths are unknown at this time. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is responding to Tanana to investigate the incident and surrounding circumstances of the Troopers deaths. Next of kin for the deceased is underway. We will provide more details as they become available.

Update:

The bodies of Sergeant Johnson and Trooper Rich have been recovered from Tanana and are being transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Anchorage today. It is anticipated that their remains will arrive in Anchorage at approximately 11:15 am at Signature Air Cargo located at 3600 Old International Airport Drive. From there, a small procession will accompany them to the State Medical Examiner’s Office located at 5455 Dr Martin Luther King Jr. There will be a 24-hour vigil conducted by the Alaska State Troopers and other Law Enforcement Officers that request to participate.

Investigators are remaining on scene in Tanana collecting evidence and interviewing members of the community in regards to the incidents and circumstances leading up to the deaths of Sergeant Johnson and Trooper Rich.

Two men have been taken into custody in Tanana by the Alaska State Troopers. Arvin Morse Kangas, 58 of Tanana, was charged with Assault in the 4th Degree and Driving with a License Revoked. These charges stem from an incident with a Tanana VPSO on April 30, 2014. Nathanial Lee Kangas, 19 of Tanana, is under arrest for the murder of Trooper Sergeant Patrick “Scott” Johnson and Trooper Gabriel “Gabe” Rich. Formal charges for Nathanial Kangas are being prepared by the Alaska State Trooper with the help of the Office of Special Prosecutions and Appeals.
