PENSACOLA, FL – At approximately 11:00 Wednesda evening, April 30, 2014, an apparent gas explosion occurred at Escambia County Jail’s Central Booking area causing a partial building collapse. Roughly 600 prisoners were in the building at the time.
Uninjured inmates were moved to various other detention facilities in Escambia and Santa Rosa County. Between 100 and 150 prisioners and corrections officers have been injured and transported to local hospitals. Two inmates are confirmed dead.
Primary and secondary sweeps of the facility have been completed. Search and rescue will continue to work to ensure the building is clear.
