Wastewater discharge to Mississippi River at Keokuk

KEOKUK – The city of Keokuk discovered a wastewater discharge near Soap Creek and Carbide Lane at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The city crew found the line was plugged, causing about 20 gallons per minute of untreated wastewater to flow into Soap Creek which flows into the Mississippi River. The discharge was ongoing as of 3 p.m. Monday.

The DNR recommends keeping children and pets away from Soap Creek near Carbide Lane and downstream to the Mississippi River for 24 to 48 hours after the line is fixed.

The city crew televised the sewer line to locate the plug, but was still working to remove the plug and allow wastewater to resume flowing to the city’s treatment plant.

The city has taken stream samples for testing and will notify DNR when the wastewater line is repaired. The DNR will continue to monitor the situation.
